Tamil Nadu Minister Slams Centre Over Delimitation and NEP, Calls for Greater Focus on Northern States' Development

Tamil Nadu's Opposition to the Centre's New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 Explained - ArdorComm Media Group

Amid ongoing discussions on delimitation and language issues, Tamil Nadu Minister for IT and Digital Services, Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, has urged the Centre to focus on the progress of the northern states rather than issuing threats to the south. Addressing the matter at The Indian Express’s Idea Exchange session, Thiaga Rajan, who previously served as the state’s Finance Minister, emphasized that there would be no concession on the issues at hand, citing factors such as the devolution of taxes and the population imbalance across states.

Thiaga Rajan pointed out that the fiscal gap between states has been widening, with a growing net transfer of resources from wealthier states to poorer ones. He stated, “When this government came to power, for every rupee in grants and taxes given to Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh received Rs 2.90. By 2024, this figure increased to Rs 4.35 for UP, while Tamil Nadu continued to receive only Re 1.”

Despite this, he noted that Uttar Pradesh’s per capita GDP relative to Tamil Nadu has declined. He questioned, “How can we expect to achieve equality when the funds are continually redirected, yet no tangible results are produced?”
